The girls missed a lot of school when we went on our Disney trip. Mackenzie missed 8 days & Madison missed 5 days, because she only goes three days a week. The school was very supportive of our trip, but we had to return with all of the makeup work done. Madison's work was fairly easy and only required an extra 30 min-1 hour a day during the week and a half before we left. Mackenzie's work was another story...it was A LOT! Thankfully, Mrs. Martin gave it to me the Friday before Spring Break, so we were able to work on it during Spring Break and then for the next two weeks leading up to our trip. It was really a heavy load on Mackenzie, but she worked so hard and I was so proud of her! We still had to do some review and a little bit of work in the van on the way home, but for the most part, she had it all done beforehand. One thing that I was a little concerned about was the fact that she had to do an oral report over a chapter in a Wagon Train book the day she returned to school. She didn't seem concerned about it though, and Mrs. Martin said she did great.
Two lessons I learned...1. I'm not sure we can ever miss that much school again. 2. Homeschooling would be the end of me.
Seriously, I came out on the other side of all this work more thankful than ever that God has provided for our schooling! Our amazing trip to Disney World was definitely worth all of this hard work though! As fun as the trip was, it was good to be back home and get settled back into a normal routine again.
Trust me, Mackenzie...I felt the same way!
On top of all of the regular work, we had to read three books...Little Pilgrim's Progress, Star of Light, and a Covered Wagons book. I almost forgot to add this...apparently the bag with all of this homework got wet and was in the hot van all week at Disney...NOT good...many of the papers were all wrinkly, moldy, and gross. I felt terrible! I made Mackenzie rewrite some of the handwriting papers, but there wasn't anything I could do about all of the worksheets. I was embarrassed and felt bad turning it in that way, but we really didn't have a choice.
Here are some notes Mackenzie made about her wagon train project. I love it that they are on Walt Disney World paper! The night G-Ma stayed with the kids while Brian and I went to EPCOT, she and Mackenzie worked on this. Mackenzie was very excited about the fact that she got to take a buffalo skull and a cattle skull to school (kudos to G-Ma), to show that they used to leave messages on the bones of cattle for travelers coming on future wagon trains to see.
Just a little note of an encouragement on her first day back. I worked so hard to make sure she wouldn't be behind or confused about things when she went back.
