Putting the Basket in the Water

As Mackenzie is beginning this new chapter of Middle School & being in the Youth Ministry, I have ALL the feelings. I worry and fret over everything, until it makes me nearly sick. I came across this article this week and it spoke right to my heart. Specifically this part...

There comes a time – many times, actually – in the lives of our children where we have to put the basket in the water.  We have to let go and trust the plan of the Father.  The world is a scary place – a place where we fear our children could drown.  But we must remember that we have to let go so that God can draw them from the waters for His great purpose.  He has called us to be their parents, but they were His first.

So I'm trying to take a deep breath and put the basket in the water...when all I really want to do is scoop my baby up and hold onto her!

Lord, she is yours...go with her!

Putting the Basket in the Water: Trusting God in the Next Phase of Your Child’s Life

In the Christian faith, Easter is the crescendo of our year.  It’s our Super Bowl.  The day that makes it all worth it.  It’s the time that marks the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The day He burst forth from the tomb and conquered death.  But this past spring, as I sat in church afterEaster yet still meditating on those days of old, a thought entered my mind:  It’s over now.  Jesus had been reunited with the Father.  The disciples were on their own.  The Bible gives us an account of what the disciples were thinking and doing after Jesus ascended into heaven, but what was the Lord thinking?  Was he watching over them, wondering, ‘Was it enough?  Did they get it?  Did I teach them everything they needed to know to do this on their own?’  As these thoughts continued to run through my mind, I couldn’t help but make the connection to the thoughts we often feel as parents embarking on the next phase of our child’s life.  ‘Did I teach him enough?  Did we spend enough time together?  Was she listening?’
The realization I had that day that Jesus truly and fully doesknow what we feel as parents was overwhelming.  When he said goodbye to His disciples, He was putting the basket in the water and trusting both the plan of the Father and the direction of the Spirit.
So what does it mean to put the basket in the water?  Back in the time of Moses, Pharaoh felt threatened by the Israelites and ordered all the midwives to kill any baby boys born to the Israelite people by drowning them in the Nile River.  But Moses’ mother wouldn’t have it.  She hid him as long as she could, and when she could no longer hide him, she put him in a basket and put the basket in the water among the reeds of the Nile.  The very river that could have drowned him was now his refuge.  She had no idea what would happen to her baby, but she trusted the plan of the Father.  As we know, baby Moses was drawn out of the water and would one day grow to become one of the greatest heroes of the Bible – the one who would rescue God’s people from slavery and lead them to the Promised Land.
Here’s what we can learn from this as parents:  There comes a time – many times, actually – in the lives of our children where we have to put the basket in the water.  We have to let go and trust the plan of the Father.  The world is a scary place – a place where we fear our children could drown.  But we must remember that we have to let go so that God can draw them from the waters for His great purpose.  He has called us to be their parents, but they were His first.  (For more on this, see 3 Ways to Stop Worrying About Your Children.)
After Jesus ascended into heaven, he was no longer human.  He had been fully reconciled to the Father and wasn’t experiencing human emotions and doubts anymore.  He obviously wasn’t questioning if He had done enough for His children during His time with them.  But how?  Before Jesus left His disciples for the last time, he gave them one final instruction; we call it the Great Commission.  “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” One last shot at being sure they knew what they needed to do.  But that’s not the end.  He closes His parting salutation with this, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:18-20)  They might not be together physically anymore, but He would always be with them, always watching, always petitioning the heart of the Father on their behalf.   And He was leaving the Spirit with them – a Helper for them, who would continue to teach them  and help them remember all He had said.  (John 14:26)
My friend, whatever water you may be getting ready to put your basket into – whether your days as a stay-at-home-mom are ending as your child starts preschool soon or if your baby has grown into a high school graduate and is getting ready to leave your home – remember that you have to put them in the water for God to draw them out and place them into His perfect plan. Though you might not be physically present with your child as much during the next phase of life, you can always petition the heart of the Father on their behalf.  And when you do this, that same Spirit that Jesus left with His disciples – that same Helper – intercedes for you, and in that you can find peace. After all, you’re entrusting your child to the same One with whom Jesus entrusted His disciples. You’re directly following the example set by Jesus.  Job well done, friend.

A New Chapter for Mackenzie

Today was Mackenzie's promotion Sunday into the Student Ministry at EFBC. I can't even believe it! It makes my heart sad and happy at the same time. I know she is ready, but man, its hard to let go!
Youth ministry is what we have done for 16+ years...but its a whole different story now that our BABY is going into the youth group! I always thought Brian would get to be her Youth Pastor, but that's not how God is writing her story. We are excited for her, but a little bit scared and overwhelmed...happy for her, but a little sad...this is the beginning of a new chapter for our family! We are so glad that God brought Ashton & Jaxi to EFBC and we look forward to partnering with them in the student ministry!
So beautiful!
Here we are smiling...
But this is how we really feel...

Falls Creek Kids

Well, we made it through our 4th summer at Falls Creek! These kids have spent more time there than most grown adults have in a lifetime. It is a very unique and special opportunity they have been given, to grow up spending their summers at Falls Creek. My heart is thankful!
There is nothing more we could want or pray for our children, than for them to always walk with Jesus and follow him! I believe and pray that Falls Creek will play a big role in shaping them into exactly who God has created them to be!

Mackenzie, Madison & Jonah,
Thank you for giving up your summers to serve alongside us at Falls Creek. You are deeply loved & valued! You are well behaved, polite and respectful...you are friendly and you bring smiles to the faces of those around you. You are a very important part of the ministry our family is a part of at Falls Creek every summer!
Thanks for being amazing kids!
8 weeks later & we still think #campisgood #campisfun !
I can't get over how much she has grown!

FC Week 8

We had a great last week of camp, complete with LOTS of pictures! Week 8 is always a little bittersweet. It's always a little sad when something comes to an end, but we were also ready for "normal" to return.
Just so the girls couldn't say we never take them swimming at Falls Creek, we FINALLY took them swimming in the entry pond one day during the last week of camp. Nothing like waiting 'til the last minute, huh?! (Brian told me later that earlier in the summer, someone was bit by a snake in that pond...eek!! Yeah, no thanks!)
I'm going to let the pictures speak for themselves, but will just wrap up with this...it was another amazing summer at Falls Creek! We are tired & blessed, and already looked forward to Falls Creek 2020, GLORY!
Thank you, Lord, for letting us serve in this capacity!
I wonder how many of these Jonah ate this summer!
I put together this video of all 8 weeks of camp!
FC Week 8 Video:
I took a picture of this game, so we would have it to remember...most days, the games go great but this one...well it was a TOTAL flop! It was hysterical how bad it was!

I really wish Jonah could just stay this size forever!
Angela and I have gotten to be really great friends over the past few years. I love her dearly and I'm so thankful for our partnership in ministry!
She wrote the sweetest message!! Love her!
My brown-eyed girl!
#photofail
We were walking out of the Ada Lodge and I thought it would be the best picture, on the bridge...but it was too sunny and this is what I got. Ha! It's still got all of my favorite people in one picture, so I had to keep it!
Jonah was "helping" Daddy on Registration day!
(That means playing on his phone, while drinking Sprite and eating Eileen's cookies!)
Mackenzie's friend, Daelyn, was at camp this week, so we didn't see a whole lot of her. They ran around together quite a bit.
Madison finally got her Simon' pin!
Week 8 means digging through the unclaimed Lost & Found items and finding some treasures to take home. Ha!
Pretty sure this is breaking the golf cart safety rules...
Favorite place at camp? Definitely the Green Room!
You just never know what you're going to see at camp!
Their pin collections definitely grew this summer!
Every Wednesday night at camp, the Program Staff has "Midweek," where they have different snacks and activities. This week was Oreos & milk, and Staff Awards.
Brian got the Potty Mouth Award, because of the hilarious game they did during week one, where he said the words like "butt" and "pee." Haha!
Brian had a rough morning with the Middle Schoolers, when he made the mistake of thinking that a boy was a girl on the stage. I felt so bad for him...it was not good...but, we all make mistakes occasionally and I could never, ever do what he does!
We drove down to the rec fields & Brian jumped in to a game of kickball...he had a very enthusiastic cheering section! Madison's sweet voice on this video kills me! "Go, Daddy, Go! Yea Daddy!!"
Mandatory "matching shirts" last week of camp pics!
On Friday afternoon, a few more of Mackenzie's friends came down to camp...this was such a fun way to end the summer at FC for Mackenzie!
Going for the carrots, like always!
So excited for next summers theme!
Daelyn's mom, Maegan, and Jordan's mom, Deanna came to camp Friday afternoon/evening to pick up Daelyn. We had a fun time showing them around camp!
One last night of running cards!
The program staff is always so sweet to our kids!
Mackenzie really loves Audrey!
So. Much. Stuff.
Bye for now, Falls Creek!
But wait...we had to stop for gas and a fried pie on our way out!
